A series of new initiatives aimed at cutting down the number of foreclosed homes and condos for sale in Illinois has been launched, with several counties already signed up while others are already in the preparation stage. According to officials, the mediation programs will help homeowners in the region avoid foreclosure.
Residents and state officials are hopeful that the mediation efforts will lessen the number of foreclosures in Plano and in other areas of the state. Madison County is one of the communities that implemented similar initiatives, with the state Supreme Court providing its approval. The high court established a committee comprised of 14 members who will make sure that an efficient and fair foreclosure procedure is being followed.
The committee is also reportedly tasked to formulate court rules that will be adopted statewide to deal with foreclosure procedures and related areas affecting homeowners and people who buy foreclosures in Illinois. Primarily though, the mediation programs were implemented to provide opportunities to lenders and borrowers to negotiate alternatives to foreclosures that will be beneficial to both parties, officials have claimed. They further stated that the initiatives will not be able to stop all foreclosure actions, but they will assist homeowners in keeping their properties and pay their monthly mortgages.
In Madison County, 1,549 foreclosed houses and condos for sale were approved by the courts in 2010, while around 1,400 foreclosure cases are currently pending. The mediation program, county officials have stated, will help lower foreclosure numbers and might also prevent pending cases from becoming actual foreclosures. They also revealed that borrowers facing potential foreclosure will receive details on how to apply for the program along with their court papers.
To those who want to save their properties from becoming foreclosures for sale, officials reported that they can request for mediation under the initiative and will have to meet certain financial requirements to qualify for assistance. Aside from Madison County, Will, DuPage and Cook counties have also implemented similar mediation efforts. Peoria County, on the other hand, is expected to make an announcement within a few weeks. The programs will involve mediators and lawyers who volunteered to be part of the initiatives, officials further revealed.
People behind the programs are hoping that the mediation efforts will help reduce the number of foreclosed dwellings and condos for sale in the region. They also stated that such initiatives are badly needed, especially since foreclosures are expected to rise again this year.
